Alan Smithee directed a lot of films — a lot of really bad films. It’s a not-so-secret secret that “Alan Smithee” is a pseudonym used by directors who don’t want their names attached to projects that were changed significantly without their consent. Take the 1990 film “Catchfire.” Despite the fact that it featured Oscar winners Jodie Foster and Joe Pesci, it was such a mess that director Dennis Hopper was credited as Alan Smithee, and Pesci had his name removed from the credits entirely.
