LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: November 14, 2022
Whether American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) are born male or female depends on the temperature where the eggs incubate before they hatch. Below 86 degrees Fahrenheit, they’ll all be female. Above 91.2 degrees, they’ll be male. At temperatures in between, the hatchlings will be a mix of males and females. Biologists call this phenomenon temperature-dependent sex determination, and it occurs in several egg-bearing reptiles including turtles.
