A hallmark of postmodernity is everyone has their own truth now. “My truth” is espoused by people who say “I feel” instead of “I think.” They do not care what is true, but want their truth reflected by others. Those who come closest build trust. Postmodernity precludes grace because postmodernity is built on emotions.

I met with some Republican donors last week who wanted my take on the lay of the land headed into 2024. They had concerns about 2024. Most were enamored with the idea of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as president. A handful had been major Trump donors and I expected some of those would still be with him. They are not.

FOREIGN POLICY: March 3, 2023

An out-of-context video featuring Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, quoted him claiming American sons and daughters will have to fight and die in Ukraine. Isolationists and pro-Russian propagandists all seized on the video to denounce American funding of Ukraine’s war effort. Understanding Zelenskyy’s statement in its context, he is right.

REPUBLICANS: February 17, 2023

Seventeen candidates entered the 2016 Republican presidential primary. All of them declared in 2015. Five of the 17 exited before the first votes were cast in 2016. In the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, 29 candidates announced they were running or forming exploratory committees. Eighteen of them exited before the first votes were cast in 2020. Eight of the 29 had announced their candidacies before February 15, 2020. Today, for the 2024 Republican presidential primary, there are just two candidates declared.

The Republican Party has problems. The party’s problems get incredible attention from the media. Political consultants wring their hands about the GOP’s problems. They have, supposedly, been on display for weeks, with much fretting over Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s speakership and the hecklers at the State of the Union. We all know the GOP has problems. But not much attention is given to the Democrats’ problems, which might prove fatal in 2024.

Poultry houses have slaughtered millions of chickens in the United States to stop the spread of avian flu. The disease spreads quickly and can contaminate egg production. Along with other factors, this has caused a shortage of eggs and a spike in prices. But even some healthy populations have stopped laying eggs, and that has led to the great chicken egg conspiracy.

Last week, I wrote about the “He Gets Us” campaign. Unfortunately, I realized too late that I had identified the wrong Servant Foundation that funded the campaign. It was not the one controlled by Methodists in Oklahoma tied to a church, but rather a donor fund operated out of Kansas.

IMMIGRATION: January 20, 2023

Jesus was a refugee, at least in a sense. This was not a controversial statement until the last few decades when illegal immigrants began pouring across the American border with a growing number taking advantage of amnesty laws to extend their stay. The Left, seeking to allow the illegal immigrants to stay, claimed not only that they were refugees, but that Jesus was too — and Scripture says to take care of the refugee.

Speaker McCarthy’s weak position

At Issue This Week . . . Republicans

I am not a Rep. Kevin McCarthy fan. I think he is both rudderless and unprincipled. He is an opportunist who has not sold anyone on a reason for him to be speaker of the House of Representatives except that it is his time. We should not reward ladder-climbers who, having gotten to the top rung, just expect to climb it. But his lack of principles has now opened the door for the biggest conservative gains in Congress in decades and he should be speaker of the House.
